We are a group of plant scientists, farmers, agronomists, conservationists, chefs and tomato enthusiasts in Mexico and the United Kingdom.  Tomatoes for Tomorrow represents an our response to the growing threats to tomato agrodiversity. Many of us have been working on tomatoes for many years, and Tomatoes for Tomorrow seeks to unite those efforts, and build greater international and cross-disciplinary collaborations.  

 

Tomatoes for Tomorrow aims to build an network of researchers, farmers, chefs and citizens working to identify, protect, utilise, promote and research Mexico’s threatened tomato agrodiversity.  This includes efforts to:

• Identify and characterise Mexico’s tomato agrodiversity and traditional knowledge before it is lost 

• Protect tomato agrodiversity, both in seed collections and on the farms where these varieties have been developed 

• Build new opportunities  for small-scale farmers who are protecting tomato agrodiversity;

• Explore the potential of tomato agrodiversity for developing higher-nutrition, lower-input and climate resilient varieties 

• Grow awareness and pride for Mexico’s tomato agrodiversity, as part of local, national and global heritage

Somos un grupo de biólogos de plantas, agricultores, agrónomos, conservacionistas, cocineros y entusiastas del tomate en México y el Reino Unido. Tomatoes for Tomorrow representa nuestra respuesta a las amenazas a la agrobiodiversidad del tomate. Muchos de nosotros hemos estado trabajando con tomates durante muchos años, y Tomatoes for Tomorrow busca unir esos esfuerzos y construir mayor colaboración internacional e interdisciplinaria.

 

Tomatoes for Tomorrow tiene como objetivo construir una red de investigadores, agricultores, chefs y ciudadanos que trabajan para identificar, proteger, utilizar, promover e investigar la agrodiversidad del tomate amenazada de México. Esto incluye esfuerzos para:

• Identificar y caracterizar la agrodiversidad del tomate y el conocimiento tradicional de México antes de que se pierda’

• Proteger la agrodiversidad del tomate, tanto en las colecciones de semillas como en las granjas donde se han desarrollado estas variedades;

• Crear nuevas oportunidades para los pequeños agricultores que protegen la agodiversidad del tomate; 

• Explorar el potencial de la agrodiversidad del tomate para desarrollar variedades de mayor nutrición, menor insumo y resistentes al cambio climático, y

• Aumentar la conciencia y el orgullo por la agrodiversidad del tomate en México, como parte del patrimonio local, nacional y mundial.
