Who we are / Quienes somos
Tomatoes are one of the world’s largest horticultural crops, and a staple ingredient globally. While tomatoes are now found all over the world, Mexico is the global centre of their domestication: Hundreds of ancestral varieties have been developed over >1300 years and across a range of climatic conditions.
However, this tomato agrodiversity is threatened. A small number of commercial varieties now dominate markets, while traditional varieties are being rapidly lost and forgotten. Meanwhile, climate change is presenting new threats to tomato production.
We are a group of plant scientists, farmers, agronomists, conservationists, chefs and tomato enthusiasts in Mexico and the United Kingdom. We work to identify, characterise, protect and celebrate Mexico's unique tomato agrodiversity. We believe that their active conservation and use will prove critical to rural livelihoods and nutrition in the future. Moreover, Mexican tomatoes will contribute to the development of climate-tolerant varieties, while preserving Mexico’s cultural and culinary heritage for the world.

Los tomates son uno de los cultivos hortícolas más grandes del mundo, y un ingrediente básico a nivel mundial. Si bien los tomates se encuentran ahora en todo el mundo, México es el centro mundial de su domesticación: se han desarrollado cientos de variedades ancestrales durante más de 1300 años y en una variedad de condiciones climáticas.
Sin embargo, esta agrodiversidad está amenazada. Un pequeño número de variedades comerciales ahora dominan los mercados, mientras que las variedades tradicionales se están perdiendo y olvidando rápidamente. Mientras tanto, el cambio climático presenta nuevas amenazas para la producción de tomate.
Somos un grupo de biólogos de plantas, agricultores, agrónomos, conservacionistas, cocineros y entusiastas del tomate en Mexico y el Reino Unido que trabajan para identificar, caracterizar, proteger y celebrar la rica agrodiversidad de tomate Mexicano. Creemos que su conservación y uso activo serán críticos para las comunidades rurales y sus insumos nutricionales en el futuro. Asi mismo el tomate Mexicano contribuirá a la generación de variedades tolerantes a cambio climático, preservando al mismo tiempo el patrimonio cultural y gastronómico de Mexico para el mundo.
